Western Russia was in the bitter grip of winter when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image on February 19, 2006. Winter was more than usually harsh in early 2006, with temperatures plummeting well below average to lows not seen in decades. (See Cold Temperatures in January on the Earth Observatory for more information.) This image shows something of the impact of the cold weather on the region. The frozen Volga River blends with the snow-dusted land along the left side of the image and other bodies of water in the region are similarly white with ice. The Ural Mountains frame the snow-bound scene on the right and Northern Kazakhstan can be seen along the lower right edge of the image.
