Argentina was in the full flush of late summer when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image on February 18, 2006. The area shown here is a rich agricultural region, producing a variety of grains, produce and meats. Agricultural fields form a geometric grid in shades of green and brown throughout the scene, particularly in the largest image. Red dots mark the locations of fires, most of which are probably agricultural fires.
Several cities can also be seen in this image. Buenos Aires is the grey semi-circle on the southern banks of the Rio de la Plata in the lower right corner of the image. Many other cities form grey dots in the fields of green, particularly along the banks of the mud-colored Parana River, which runs down the center of the image.
